The original Mini was a famous British micro-car first appearing in 1959 that attained a cult following around the world. While the new version is still built in England, the MINI company is now owned by BMW and they have played an important role in the desgin and engineering of the current model. The new MINI Cooper is a heavily modernized version and despite the small, frugal engine and tiny dimensions, it's designed to ride and handle like a sports car and this distinguishes it the most from the rest of the pack in the economy sub-compact segment. It's one of the most fuel efficient cars available in the US but potentail buyers do need to be aware that the MINI requires expensive premium gas.
